John Jay Burghart, 63, of Topeka, passed away Monday, May 1, 2017.

He was born December 27, 1953, in Portland, Oregon, the son of John Casper and Darlene Ellen (Rafferty) Burghart. He was a graduate of Hayden High School. He served in the US Air Force and US Navy during Vietnam.

John was a welder by trade.

Mr. Burghart was a member of the NRA, Fishing Club of America, North American Hunting Club and Great Life Golf Club.

John is survived by his wife, Sylvia Jean Matlock, Topeka; his daughter, Brandy M. Burghart, Valley Falls; a son, Jason Bahr, Topeka; two step-sons, Rafael Aitkens, Pittsburg, KS and Orlando Burnett, Colorado; and 18 grandchildren.

John enjoyed playing golf, fishing, hunting, camping and looking out for his neighbors.

A rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m., Monday, May 8, 2017 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, where the family will receive friends following the rosary until 8 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 3601 SW 17th Street, Topeka.

A graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday at the O’Bennick Cemetery, Delia, KS.
