Frances Shumate Caldwell 77, of Rich Creek, died Thursday morning, February 2, 1995, in the Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg.

A lifelong resident of Giles County, she was born on September 5, 1917, and was the daughter of the late Edgar Burgess and Frances Lillian Moses Shumate.

She was preceeded in death by her husband, L. Peck Caldwell; three brothers, Edgar B. Shumate, Jr., Woodrow W. Shumate, James W. Shumate; and one sister, Margaret S. Bonham.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Doug Frazier, Rich Creek; a daughter, Eleanor C. O'Connor, Roanoke; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Linda Caldwell, Etowah, Tenn.; a son, Daniel P. Caldwell, Radford; two sisters, Imogene S. Sivley , Homossa Springs, Fla., Billie Sue Turner, Narrows; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, 2 p.m., in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service, Narrows, with the Rev. Alan Wilder officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at Riffe's in Narrows, Friday evening from 5 to 9 p.m. The family suggests that those who are going to send memorials, please consider, The Ronald McDonald House, 2224 S. Jefferson Street, Roanoke, Va.
