“One of the greatest figures in the colonial trade during the pre-civil war period.”___Robert Brenner

“Samuel Vassal ... among the most active participants in colonial schemes, & interlocked in any number of overlapping ventures.”___Jonathan Beecher Field

Send Samuel Vassall to some prison in remote parts where he cannot “seduce the king's people.” Probably 1640, when King Charles I’s officials, thought Richard Chambers & Samuel Vassall were circulating a petition in London to recall Parliament.

1 Oct 1628: Refused to pay tonnage and poundage for Currants, an imposition he believed to be against the law of the land, and the Magna Carta. 4 Mar 1628/9: Named in charter of Massachusetts Bay Co. as Associate & Assistant. 16 Jun 1630: Refused to pay at Tilbury, “that pretended duty,” on a shipload of “that drug called tobacco,” from Virginia. 1630: Had a right to plant a Colony in Carolana under Heath Patent. 1635: Imprisoned for refusing to pay ship money to King of England. In Feb 1639, king Charles I issued a proclamation against the reading of “Scottish pamphlets, manuscripts covenanting propaganda.” It was a proclamation of censorship. In 1640, Samuel Vassall was discovered circulating Scottish books. 1640-1648: Member House of Parliament representing London. 25 Feb 1659/60: Appointed a Commissioner for Customs, Port of London. 1662: Lived Coleman Street Ward, 4th Precinct, London. 1662-1666: Involved to minor extent in planting of Cape Fear Colony in present day North Carolina.
Samuel’s career of import export shipping included trade between England & Italy, Mediterranean, Turkey, Virginia, Spain, Massachusetts, Barbados, Carribean, Guinea, Africa. He traded silks, wool, currants, tobacco, transported colonists & their cargos.
