Melba Rose Engel, 80, Ellis, died Sunday, April 23, 2017, at Hays Medical Center. She was born March 27, 1937, in Great Bend to Rudolf K. and Inez V. (Sanders) Voss.


She married Eugene J. Engel on June 11, 1957, in Ellis. He preceded her in death.


She was a 1955 graduate of Mankato High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State College in 1959. She was a homemaker and worked at Travenol and Adronics in Hays, Avery in Wichita, served as a substitute teacher at St. Mary grade school, Ellis, and cooked at the Ellis Good Samaritan Center. She was a member of St. Mary Church, Ellis, Daughters of Isabella, joining in 1961, Ellis Meal Site helper, and she was involved in the Ellis Sunflower 4-H club. She enjoyed reading, sewing, bingo, playing cards and puzzles.


Survivors include six daughters, Charla Shultz and husband, Randy, Rochester, Minn., Caylia Shandrick, Thornton, Colo., Christa Kinderknecht and husband, Les, Hays, Creta LaBarge and fiancé, Brad Leiker, Ellis, Chonda Rosario and husband, Joe, Belleville, N.J., and Candra Stelmach and husband, Stan, Trophy Club, Texas; a son, Carl Engel and wife, Carissa, Wichita; a brother, Ken Voss and wife, Billie, Vancouver, Wash.; a sister, Karen Grossman, Larned.


Also survive by 19 grandchildren, Allison Smith and husband, Brandon, ShyAnne Shultz, Madeline Logan and husband, Aaron, Frankie Shandrick, Scott Kinderknecht and wife, Sarah, Ally Tucker and husband, Eric, Shawna LaBarge and fiancé, Ryan Remer, Shayla Luea, Jr. LaBarge Sondra Huffman and husband, Tony, Joey, Jonathan and Jace Rosario, Kirstin Arndt and husband, Christopher, Karissa Stelmach, Brett, Brody and Bryce Engel; and 13 great-grandchildren, Alexis and Jordan Logan, Adley and Owen Kinderknecht, Zade Tucker, Brevin LaBarge, Bryson Luea, Malia, Jackson, Luke, Keegan and Kenley Huffman; and numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.


She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Shirley Engel; a son-in-law, Frank Shandrick; and a grandson, Paul Joseph Kinderknecht.


Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Mary Catholic Church, Ellis; inurnment in St. Mary Cemetery, Ellis. Family will be present at 1 p.m. until service time of service to greet friends Friday at the church. A rosary will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the church. Keithley Funeral Chapel, 400 E. 17th, Ellis, KS 67637, is in charge of arrangements.
