A Civil War veteran, he was federally drafted at the stated age of thirty-seven [sic], mustered into federal service at Chambersburg November 14, 1864, as a private with Co. D, 82nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 13, 1865. The reason for the inflated enlistment age is unknown.
He reportedly married Mary Martha Hammerick, but nothing more is known of her. He then married the much younger Margaret Alice Kint, fathering the children you see linked below. In 1890, he was living in Liberty Township, Adams County, but died at Fairfield where he had been a member of Dixon Post No. 83, G.A.R. His death notice in the Adams County Independent lists him as "Fred Nindel."
