He grew up on a farm in Tom Green County. He was an All-Star football and basketball player at Tom Green High School and went to UTA in Arlington on an athletic scholarship. There, he got a BS in mathematics. He worked as a salesman for Burroughs Corporation when he married Dyane Ruth Grubbs in Fort Worth. Burroughs transferred him to Waco, where they lived briefly. Dyane recollects he would take her night fishing at a nearby lake with just a lantern for light.

After a few months in Waco, he was transferred to Sherman, TX, where his first son was born. They were only there for a few months when Burroughs moved him back to Fort Worth, where his second son was born. After a year, Burroughs moved them to Kansas City, MO, where they lived for four years. Burroughs then wanted to transfer him to Tennessee, but Russ had grown tired of moving around and left Burroughs to start his own business. Moving the family back to Fort Worth, he started American Business Forms and succeeded until his retirement.

He loved the outdoors, working on cars with his sons and sitting in his office with his lapdog, Betsy. He was a crack shot with a rifle or shotgun. Often referred to as a "gentle giant," he stood 6ft6in tall and treated everyone he met as if they were old friends.
