Leon Lawrence Burcalow, 83, a native of Burkburnett, Texas, formerly of Kilgore, Texas, and resident of Jackson, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kilgore Cemetery.

He is survived by five daughters, Susan Goudeau and husband, Jimmy, of Baton Rouge, Beth Winkler and husband, Chris, of Birmingham, Katherine Burcalow and husband, Craig Flentke, of Austin, Texas, Rosemary Vegas and husband, John, of Houston and Raynelle Lanier and husband, Phillip, of Stafford, Va.; two sons, David Burcalow and wife, Memory, of Amsterdam, N.Y., and retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. James M. Burcalow of Platte City, Mo.; five grandchildren, Allison Winkler, Robbie Winkler, Kelly Goudeau, Thomas Lanier and Elizabeth Burcalow; and one sister, Doris Riddlesperger.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Bessie Burcalow; three sisters, Bobby Kerr, Billie Lee Thornbrugh and Rose Thompson; one brother, Jesse Burcalow; and one granddaughter, Claire Renee Goudeau.

He lived with his wife, Lucy Abercrombie Burcalow, in Thibodaux for more than 30 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II during which he participated in the June 6, 1944, D-Day landings in Normandy, France. He also served in the Southwest Pacific Theater of operations, where he participated in combat operations in New Guinea and Luzon in the Philippines. He retired from Exxon with more than 40 years of service.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, barbequing and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was also a member of the D-Day Museum in New Orleans and participated in the 60th anniversary of the Normandy Invasion celebrations at the museum in June 2004.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Claire Renee Goudeau Memorial Fund Inc., 19535 W. Piney Point Ave., Baton Rouge, LA 70817, or the National World War II Museum, 945 Magazine St., New Orleans, LA 70130.
