Mrs. Julia Williams received a letter last week informing her of the death of Mr. J. F. Dufour, age 95 years, who died at his home in Sacramento, Calif, Sat. August 11th from infirmities of old age. Mr. Dufour was the last of 45 cousins in his family. He was one of the early pioneer Dufour family who helped settle Vevay, but removed to Calif. about 20 years ago.
He was a veteran of the Mexican War 1846-1848 and had voted in every presidential election except one since 1844 when he cast his first ballot for James K. Polk. Mr. Dufour delighted in reading Eggleston's Hoosier Schoolmaster for many of the characters were modeled after his relatives and intimate friends.
Mr. Dufour is survived by three daughters, Miss Mollie Dufour, Mrs. B. S. Spillman and Mrs. Lillie Robb and three sons, Samuel, William and Maurice, all of Calif. Besides there are a number of Switzerland County [Indiana] relatives, Mr. Montgomery Patton is a brother-in-law of the deceased. E.M. Stevens, a nephew, Mrs Nora Dupraz and Miss Eliza Dufour are nieces and there are a number of cousins scattered over the county.

Franklin Dufour is descended from one of the Swiss families that settled Vevay, Switzerland County, Indiana. He was in the Mexican War as a Pvt. in Capt. Scott Carter's, 3rd Regt. Indiana Volunteers. Commanded by Col. James Lane. Enlisting at New Albany, Indiana, 18 Jun 1846, then to New Orleans, LA, Brazos Island, Matamoro, Monterey, Saltello, Aques Neuva, Buena Vista and back to new Orleans. Discharged 26 Jun 1847
