Charles "Charlie" Alves, age 79, a native and life-long resident of Benicia, California passed away April 1, 2017, in a local hospital. He was born on Oct. 13, 1937 to Almyr and Lillian Alves.

Charlie was a 5th generation Benician and graduate of Benicia High School in 1955. He worked as a butcher for almost 14 years at the former Park & Shop Market in Benicia before changing careers. Charlie attended Laney Beauty College in Oakland and then opened "Chez Charles", a hair salon on First Street in 1966. He moved the salon to his house in 1996 and continued working up until his passing. He has been the hairdresser at Passalacqua Funeral Chapel and Twin Chapels Mortuary for more than 40 years.

Charlie loved traveling the world and had been on over 50 cruises. Charlie loved his parties, including his annual open house at the Peddlers Fair. He was a gourmet cook and bartender, an astute businessman, and always enjoyed a lively discussion of the political scene here in town as well as on the national level. Charlie was the Grand Marshall of the Benicia Torchlight Parade in 2008.

Charlie is survived by his son; his adorable dog, Bacall; and a host of dear longtime friends both at home and abroad. He will be missed by all who had the chance to know him. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Tommy Alves. Burial was held at St. Dominic's Cemetery, Benicia, California.
