Born May 6, 1930, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Neriah McCubbins Benfield and Alda Eugenia Horton Benfield.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Lee Dennis; brothers, George McCubbins Benfield, Kenneth Lee Benfield, James Ervin Benfield and Herman Larry Benfield; and sister, Carolyn Thompson.
Prior to moving to Statesville, Mary was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Mary thoroughly enjoyed working at the VA Hospital in Salisbury for many years. After moving to Hickory, she retired from the Social Security Office in 1987.
Survivors include her niece, Judy Hutchison and husband, Connor, of Cleveland, NC; niece, Debby Hudson; nephews, Michael Thompson, Mark Benfield, David Benfield and C.J. Benfield; and her special friend, Ute Rumswinkel.
A graveside service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, with Pastor William Thrailkill officiating.
