George Bruno, grocer, Carnival enthusiast
George Raymond Bruno, a retired grocer and haberdasher who was a major force in St. Bernard Parish's Carnival celebration, died Friday of coronary-artery disease at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in New Orleans. He was 75.
Mr. Bruno, who died at the onset of the 2004 parade season, had organized St. Bernard's first night procession in 1969, when the Jupiter organization hit the streets. The krewe had about 200 members, and Mr. Bruno, its captain, rode a mini-float at the head of the parade.
He enhanced the spectacle by instituting outsized headgear for krewe dignitaries and by adding electric lights to the costumes Mr. Bruno and Jupiter's king, queen, dukes and maids wore. Jupiter rolled for about 15 years.
A former member of the Carnival Captains Club, Mr. Bruno also had been general chairman of the Krewe of Lourdes' ball, a founding member of the Krewe of Endymion and a member of the Krewe of Okeanos and the Knights of Babylon. In 1972, he was king of the Krewe of Juno.
He was born in New Orleans and had lived in St. Bernard Parish for 50 years. He attended St. John the Baptist Grammar School and S.J. Peters High School. Mr. Bruno went to business school until 1950, when he joined the Marine Corps Reserve and was called to active duty during the Korean War.
Mr. Bruno owned the Quarter Grocery Store and the Sharp Shop Clothing Store and was a member of the St. John the Baptist Parochial School Altar Boy Alumni Group.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Quentin Bruno; two sons, Rene Steven and Gary Quentin Bruno; a sister, Rose Bruno Richard; and three grandchildren.
A Mass will be said Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Vickers, Verrette & Dornan Funeral Home, 3027 Jean Lafitte Parkway, Chalmette. Visitation will be held there today from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Monday beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Burial will be in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens in Chalmette.
