Although his tombstone is inscribed with a birth year of 1876, on his World War I draft registration in 1917, Thomas provided a birthdate of 11 September 1877. On his WWII draft registration (27 April 1942), he reported a birthdate of 11 September 1878.

Thomas was the oldest child of James Ephraim Barnes and Nancy Jane (Yates) Barnes, who married 16 November 1876 in Falls County, Texas. He had 13 younger siblings.

On 7 December 1914, he married Florence Oliver in Potter County, South Dakota.

On 7 July 1919, he married Jessie M. Pence in Brown County, South Dakota.
