Daniel A. DiTunno, 89, of Wethersfield, passed away on April 16, 2017 with his loving family by his side. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years, Frances H. (Zito) DiTunno.

He was born in Hartford on December 3, 1927, the son of Joseph and Mary (Pallotti) DiTunno. He was a graduate of Bulkeley High School, class of 1946. He married the love of his life, Frannie in 1954, they resided in Hartford until November of 1965, then moved to Wethersfield. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII overseas and was called back to active duty in the Korean War as a training NCO. He began work in 1954 for the City of Hartford in the Engineering Department. He oversaw construction of city projects, such as the demolition of buildings to prepare for the construction of Constitution Plaza. He was responsible for testing of concrete at the Hartford Public Highway, oversaw all sidewalk construction in the city and for many years was responsible for the snow removal. He was promoted to the Supervisor of Construction of Public Works and Engineering in 1972. Dan was very involved in the formation of the Municipal Employees Union (HMEU) and served as President. He retired from the city in 1992 after 38 years of service. He was a charter member of the Elks in Rocky Hill and a member and supporter of the VFW.

Daniel was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather (Grand Papa). He is survived by his children, Edward J. DiTunno and his wife Debbie of Kamiah, Idaho, Darlene Saler and her husband Tom of Norwich, Vermont, Carol Tucker and her husband Brad of Wethersfield, Kate Grimaldi and her partner Craig Wysocki of Durham, Daniel J. DiTunno and his wife Lucille of Rocky Hill and Fran Mazzarella and her husband Jim of Berlin, 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He also leaves his brother and sister-in-law, Sylvester and Evelyn DiTunno of Wethersfield; sister and brother-in-law, Ann Marie and Paul Vasington of Mystic; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Julia and Michael DiCandio of Cromwell; his cousin, Polly Civiello of Newington and many nieces and nephews. Daniel was predeceased by his sister, Alexandria Gallucci and his sister-in-law, Barbara Fillatti.

Funeral services will begin Thursday (April 20) at 9 a.m. at the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect St., Wethersfield. Burial with military honors will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. Family and friends may call on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
