Cecilia was the daughter of Angus McMurchy and Mary H. Sartoris. Her father passed away when she was 11 and her mother passed away when she was 14. Mr. and Mrs. Beverly and Ida Childs brought her up after that point in time. She was listed as their adopted daughter under the name Celia M Childs in the 1910 Census and B W Childs was listed as guardian on Angus McMurchy's Civil War pension card.

(*Cecilia is seen in records and newspapers under various names: her biological one of McMurchy; her guardianship/adoptive one of Childs; her married name of Mayer; her married name of Newman. They are sometimes seen in combination, such as McMurchy Childs or Childs Newman. Also note that her birth location is sometimes indicated to be Virginia, however the earliest census for her in 1900 and her first marriage record indicate Illinois and Chicago, respectively.)

She was a music teacher at an early age and continued this work for decades, while often performing on piano or organ at various events in Tacoma over the years, including at one when she was 93 years of age. Her name often appeared in newspapers in conjunction with her performances.

Cecilia married John B Mayer in 1913 and a newspaper announced their marriage listing her name as Miss Cecilia Marceline Childs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Beverly Childs. One year later, their son, Francis Bernard Mayer was born.

By the time of the 1920 Census, Cecilia was married to German-born baker Fred W Newman, and her son, Francis, appears with the Newman name, however, he is also enumerated as living with his father, named as Francis B Mayer on a separate 1920 Census sheet. He is counted twice in both the 1920 and 1930 Censuses as each parent lists him as living with them.

Fred W Newman is not seen living with Cecilia in the 1930 Census and she is listed as widowed in the 1940 Census and as divorced in the 1950 Census.

Son Francis was a notable architect; he traveled to Anchorage, Alaska in 1939 and was partner in the firm Manley and Mayer, designing many buildings there. He went to Perth, Australia in 1972, then to Oak Harbor and finally to Bellingham, Washington where he passed away in 1985, leaving behind a daughter, a son, and grandchildren.
