Mr. Carl Olliff Akins, age 75, died Tuesday night at Ogeechee Area Hospice’s Inpatient Facility.

Carl was born at home on the Akins Dairy Farm on February 19, 1942, to John L. and Anna Ruth Cason Akins.

Carl grew up loving the land and made a career of row crop farming. He lived all of his life on the farm that he dearly loved.

Carl was a 1960 graduate of Statesboro High School. He was on the football team, 4-H and FFA member all four years of high school. Carl also attended Swainsboro Technological School taking courses in automotive mechanics.

Carl loved the outdoors and was an avid and accomplished horseman, winning many ribbons and awards with his stud horse, Bamba. Hunting and fishing, watching college and pro football, and spending time outdoors were just a few of his many hobbies. After a hard day’s work, Carl enjoyed mixing a cocktail, lighting the grill, grabbing his hoe, and working in the garden. Carl gardened until his death and it gave him great joy to share the bounty with friends and neighbors, especially the silver queen corn.

Carl was a veteran of the Air National Guard where he served as a Sergeant of the 165th Military Air Lift Group. He was presented the Airman’s Medal on January 9, 1972, by distinguishing himself through an act of heroism involving voluntary risk of life, as well as prevention of destruction of a fueling facility from fire or explosion. He was the first Airman to receive an Air Force recognition at this Air National Guard Airlift Group assigned to Savannah Municipal Airport since it’s beginning in 1946.

Carl is preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, John Roger Akins and William Aubrey Akins.

The family will receive visitors from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
Graveside funeral service and burial will be private with Rev. Bill Bagwell officiating.
