John was the son of Caroline (Fair)and Nevil Arterburn. He was one of the nine men killed by Anderson's Guerillas on 11 July 1864.

He married Mary Elizabeth Burkhart, 25 Dec 1860 in Wakenda, Carroll Co, MO. John was the father of two children; John Nevil Arterburn (1861) and Osa Jane (1864)Arterburn.

He had been a member of Captain Love's company, Seventh Missouri Volunteer Cavalry, from which he had been discharged for physical disability.

John was buried in an unmarked grave with two other men killed that day; Alexander Skaggs and Richard Wilson
