George Charles Carter, 79 of Bloomington formerly of Decatur passed away at 4:17 PM Friday April 7, 2017 at his residence.

There will be a funeral for George on Thursday April 13, 2017 at 10:30 AM at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home in Bloomington. Deacon Mike Ellerman will officiate.

There will be a visitation for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL.

He was born December 29, 1937 in Aston, Pennsylvania to Amos and Ruth “Hannah” Steward Carter Sr. He married Chong Suk Yi on June 27, 1978 in El Paso, Texas. She survives.

He is also survived by two daughters, Linda (Doug) Ellerman of Bloomington and Donna (Ken) Griffen of Kensington, CT, four grandchildren, Sarah Ellerman, Chase Ellerman, Selden Griffen, Rebecca Griffen and three brothers Harry (JoAnn) Carter of Downtingtown, PA, Walter (Sheila) Carter of Riverview, Michigan, and Presley (Joanne) Carter of Aston,
PA.

George retired from the United States Army in August of 1983 after 26 years of service to his country. He was a Helicopter Mechanic and later was Command Sergeant Major (E-9) over the 5th Battalion, 3rd Basic Training Brigade, United States Army Training Center and Fort Dix in
New Jersey and the 2nd Aviation Battalion (combat), 2nd Infantry Division. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal twice and the Army Achievement Medal for his outstanding leadership, high ethical standards, and professionalism. After his retirement he worked over twenty years for the State of Illinois as a Security Guard for the National Guard Armory in Decatur, IL.
