Selah Brewster Strong (1792-1872) - Find a Grave Memorial

US Congressman. He graduated from Yale in 1811, studied law, and in 1814 began a legal practice in New York City. He was commissioned as an Ensign during the War of 1812, assigned as Quartermaster of a Regiment in the New York Militia, and subsequently promoted to Lieutenant and Captain. In 1817 he was appointed to the judicial office of Master in Chancery. He moved to Brookhaven in 1820 and was Suffolk County District Attorney from 1821 to 1830, and afer a nine month hiatus, again from 1830 to 1847. In 1825 Strong was appointed Judge Advocate of the New York Militia's First Division. In 1842 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat and served one term, 1843 to 1845. He did not run for reelection in 1844 and returned to practicing law. In 1847 he became Judge of the New York Supreme Court's Second District, serving until his 1860 retirement. In 1867 Strong was a Delegate to the New York Constitutional Convention.
