Born to John Gholson Chatham (1820-1887) & Rotilda Wood Chatham (1831-1916). Rufus was named for his maternal uncle, Rufus Henry Wood (1836-1886).

Rufus married Courtenay Hood (1865-1950) of Texas on Nov. 2, 1884, in Weatherford, TX.

• Courtenay Chatham McKenzie (1894-1989)

The 1889 Waco City Directory shows Rufus & his brother, Robert Carleton Chatham, as employed by Barrett, Chatham & Co. From 1892-95, Waco City Directory shows him & Herbert A. Paine employed with Paine, Chatham & Co., selling cotton mill and gin machinery. Rufus' mother, Rotilda Chatham, is living in the household. From 1898-1901, he is shown as vice president of Kellett-Chatham Machinery Co. in the Waco City Directory.
