On November 12, 2022, George Dreby Ellis of Haddonfield, NJ, age 93 years, died peacefully at home. He was the beloved husband of the late Florence Mae (nee Bowman) and loving father to G David Ellis, MD, and his wife Sheila of Lumberton, NJ and Daniel T Ellis, MD, and his wife Amy Sproch, MD, of Haddonfield, NJ. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Nathaniel, Ethan, Carleigh, Lillian, and Ava. He is predeceased by his siblings: Walter, Helen, Mary Jane and Charles. Mr. Ellis and his wife were the long-time owners of Ellis Meats Inc, in Mount Laurel, NJ.

Mr. Ellis' ancestors were among the earliest settlers in southern New Jersey and played a leading role in developing the area that became Camden County and established the town of Ellisburg, now in Cherry Hill Township.

George D Ellis was born in 1929 in Haddonfield, Camden County, New Jersey, son of Walter Starn Ellis and Mary Jane Dreby, grandson of Charles Howard and Emma Campbell. His great grandfather Isaac L Ellis founded the Ellis meat business in 1887/88 in Haddonfield.

Mr. Ellis received his education in the Haddonfield public schools at Tatem Elementary and Haddonfield High School. As a youth, he took interest in the family business and assisted his father at Walter S Ellis & Sons wholesale meat business in Haddonfield. He became familiar with every detail of the trade, including butchering, buying, selling, and producing specialized meat products. This knowledge and experience led to a lifelong success in the wholesale and retail meat industry.

W.S. Ellis & Sons business expanded and moved operations to Route 73 in Pennsauken, NJ. Wholesale activities extended throughout the South Jersey region.

Later, Mr. Ellis worked as General Manager for Frost Pack in Penns Grove, NJ. There, he oversaw the manufacturing of meat products used to supply the restaurant industry.

George Ellis met Florence Mae Bowman, born in Delaware, daughter of Edward Lewis Bowman and Minnie Squares. In 1953, George and Florence were married at the First Baptist Church in Haddonfield. Shortly after marriage, they purchased a newly constructed house on Walnut Street in Haddonfield, where they both lived throughout their entire lives.

Always self-determined and independent, in 1964 he became the owner of Ellis Meats Inc, on Route 38 in Mount Laurel, NJ, providing for both wholesale and retail customers. His wife Florence was actively engaged in the business for many years; their hard work resulted in the 50-year longevity of Ellis Meats Inc.

Mr. Ellis served in the New Jersey Army National Guard at the Camden City Armory. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Haddonfield. He enjoyed skiing in the Poconos, sailing, motor boating, fishing, and motorcycle riding.
