Louis was born to John Steel Painter Leatham and Anna Loretta "Annie" Halverson. His grandfather and grandmother on his father's side was John Steel Leatham and Mary Ann Painter. His great grandfather and great grandmother on his father's side was Robert Urquhart Leatham (who was born in Millcroft, Lanark, Scotland) and Jane Alexander Steele (who was born in Kilbirnie, Ayr, Scotland. Robert brought his family to America shortly after they joined the Church, arriving in 1852. They were sent to help colonize Cedar City and spent several years there before moving to Cache County, where they eventually built a home in Wellsville.
Louis married Roma Pitcher, and they had one known child, Louise Pitcher Leatham who was born and died on 23 July 1939.
