In 1916, Thomas married Virginia McAvoy, whose family was also transplanted from Bracken, and they moved to Detroit, Michigan where Thomas worked as an engine mechanic at Continental Motors. He was a tall man, 6'2".
By 1929 he was a branch manager of a local A&P Grocery store and later was a manager of a Pure Foods Grocery.
