Karl "Charles" Christian Heinrich Brandt was the oldest son of Christian "Frederick" and Dorothee Katherine Margaretha (Wiese) Brandt.

Charles was probably named after his paternal grandfather Carl Heinrich D. "Charles" Brandt.

When Charles was 11 months old, his father was mustered into Civil War service [Oct. 3, 1864] with Company A, 6th Wisconsin Infantry and served until July 14, 1865.

The Brandt home is pictured above. When Charles lived there, it was probably still a log house.

Charles died of diphtheria at the age of 8 years, 2 months, 11 days. His younger sister Louisa Dorothea Wilhelmina died of the same illness two days after his death.

He was buried in the Brandt family burial plot which later became the Old Saint Paul Lutheran Cemetery. It was on January 6, 1872, just a few days before Charles and Louisa died, that Frederick and Dorathea Brandt sold land located in the North side of Section 26 for a church which was then called "The Lutheran Church of Washington" and later named St Paul's Lutheran Church.
