Obituary of Thomas Jefferson Taylor:

Thomas J. Taylor died in Eureka Nevada, January 5 1884 of paralysis of the heart aged 70 years 8 months 6 days.
The funeral of Col. Thomas J. Taylor took place yesterday from the Episcopal Church and was attended by a concourse of the friends of the family. The deceased caught a severe cold some ten days ago by exposure in a snow storm which caused his recent illness resulting in his death.
Col. Tom Taylor, as he was usually called was a native of East Tennessee and was born August 29th in 1813. He came to California first in 1849 and mined on the east fork of the Feather River for two years. He went thence to Marysville and engaged in merchandising there until 1859. He next removed to Virginia City and continued there in his business until 1865,1869, prospecting for petroleum, thence came back to Nevada, was in the White Pine excitement in the latter part of 1869 and came to make his final home in Eureka one year later. Since 1870 he had been engaged here in smelting and mining.

The deceased leaves a wife and son, Little Tom Taylor, a bright and handsome child and a general favorite throughout the town. Col. Taylor possessed a large fund of practical information in regard to mines and mining and on the whole was generally successful in the avocation in which so many fail. He was a man of remarkable character and actuated, always, by the uncompromising principle of honor. He was universally respected, an energetic, useful citizen and his death is much regretted in the community. Those who are bereaved by his death at a ripe old age have the full sympathy of a large circle of friends and acquaintances.
