Charles Carroll Townsend was know as Carroll. He was the son of Chester Crosby Townsend and Caroline DeMary,and had one younger brother George, who was born in Wisconsin. The family settled in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin in the early 1840s following Carroll's birth. He married Augusta Mary Reynolds, October 15, 1872, in Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois. Carroll was the father of six children, two daughters, Herbie Rebecca and Esther Mae, and four sons Reynolds George, Charles Carroll Jr., William C., and Harold H.

Carroll moved his family to Missouri in the 1890s, and remained there until his death in 1911, of acute gastritis. He was laid to rest April 11, 1911, in Gamel Cemetery.
