James was the son of Civil War soldier Artibanus Drake and Margaret Ann Finney, who married on 30 Aug 1860 in Marshall Co., Indiana. According to Margaret on the 1900 Census, the couple had nine children together. I found the names for eight—Rebecca (c.1862), Emma E. (22 Sep 1867 – 15 Jul 1937), Frederick (c.1869), John Wellington (16 Sep 1872 – 10 May 1946), Urban Sidney (8 Oct 1874 – 11 Apr 1957), Viola (c.1877), James Harvey (7 Jul 1881 – 8 Nov 1939), and Francis Emery (28 Aug 1883 – 16 Jan 1955).

I found James' parents and siblings on the 1870 Census, living in Argos, Walnut Township, Marshall Co., Indiana. Artibanus Drake, aged 35, was noted simply as a laborer. Margaret, aged 24, was home with their three children—Rebecca, aged 8, Emma, aged 2, and Frederick, aged 7 months.

The family was still in Argos when the 1880 Census came around. Artibanus, aged 42, was noted as a farmer. Margaret, aged 36, was home with Emma, aged 12, John, aged 8, Urban, aged 5, and Viola, aged 3. Conspicuously absent was son Frederick, who would have only been about ten years old. Also gone was daughter Rebecca, who would have been about 18.

Because of the loss of the 1890 Census, James first appeared with his family on the 1900 Census. They were still living in Argos. Artibanus Drake, aged 62, was working as a saw dresser. Margaret, aged 56, reported that she had had nine children, but that only five had survived to that census. There with their parents were John, aged 27 and working as a railroad agent, Urban, aged 26, noted as a laborer, James, aged 19 and noted as a railroad telegrapher, and Francis, aged 17 and noted as a laborer. The fifth living child was daughter Emma, so the lost children were Rebecca, Frederick, Viola and a fourth unidentified child.

James was lucky enough to be born in a small town in north-central Indiana which had a home-town newspaper that knew everybody's business. In lieu of a biographical sketch, I'm going to let the Argos Reflector tell the story of James's life. All of the clippings are from the Argos Reflector unless otherwise noted. There were dozens of notes about the family over the years. I tried to pick those that related important events and those that managed to convey the close relationship that James had with his parents, siblings, children and in-laws. Many thanks to whoever had the wherewithal to archive all those newspapers over the years so that researches could relish in something besides census records and death certificates. Enjoy.
