In Memory of Julianna Roberts
Our Mother, Julianna Roberts, was born November 20, 1912 west of Orienta, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Aaron A. And Mary Kasper Penner.
Julia grew up on the family farm west of Orienta and was the sixth child in the family of ten children. Some of her childhood memories were of bringing in the cows and helping mother in the kitchen. She and her brothers and sisters walked two and one-half miles to the Valley Center School.
Before her marriage, Julia worked out in various people’s homes when extra help was needed during harvest or after the birth of a baby.
Julia was helping serve meals to the harvesters when she met Elmer Roberts who had come to Oklahoma from Hillsboro, KS with a harvest crew. They were married that same year on September 3, 1939, a marriage which lasted more than 52 years until Elmer’s death in 1992. To this marriage five sons were born.
In 1951, Julia was baptized in the North Canadian River by John Karber of the South Mennonite Brethren Church. For many years she and Elmer served on the dining hall committee and as door greeters.
Julia, along with her husband Elmer, were members of Flying Farmers and the Fairview Flight Club and actively worked with the annual Fairview Fly-In.
In later years, Julia was truly a help-mate to her husband, accompanying him on service calls, running errands, and generally helping with the family business, Roberts Refrigeration.
Upon retirement she and Elmer moved to Mustang, Oklahoma, living on an acreage and gardening.
Her last year and a half was spent in the Fairview Fellowship Home.
Surviving are five sons, David and Elizabeth of Fairview, George Earl and Jeanette of Bethany, Ronald of Oklahoma City, Loyal and Hazel of Fairview, and Gordon and Lynetta of Oklahoma City; three brothers: Edd Penner of Orienta, Neal Penner of Enid, and Dan Penner of Medora, Kansas; two sisters: Mrs. Eunice Isaak of Fairview and Mrs. Lois Peters of Enid; 10 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Elmer on February 17, 1992; three brothers, Henry, Aaron, and John; one sister, Salome; and three infant sisters.
