Bernice Schroeder Johnson, age 81, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2017. She
was born on October 11, 1935 in Weimar, Texas to Bennie A. Schroeder and Emma Schwartz
Schroeder. Bernice graduated from Weimar High School and moved to Houston shortly
thereafter. Dorothy, her older sister, insisted that she apply for a job at the Law Offices of
Solito, Vetrano, and Murr. Bernice was employed there from January 1957 until June 2005.
Bernice loved to work in the yard, tend her garden, and spoil her babies with fresh fruit and
vegetables. She was lovingly called Nanny by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Another favorite pastime was listening to music with her friends. She will be missed by all and
remembered by many.
Bernice is preceded in death by her husband Melvin Kaluza, her daughter Deborah
Kaluza, and her grandson Tyler Whitehead. Survived by her sister Gladys Schroeder Muras;
her son Mark Kaluza, her daughter Teri Whitehead and husband Ronnie; grandchildren,
Amanda Dunn and husband Kyle, Jake Whitehead and fiancé Jenna Murphy, Dillon Tuttle, Luke
Kaluza, and John Ty Kaluza; and great granddaughters Kara, Elizabeth, and Lauren
