In 1943, he was with Montreal. That year he also backed up Arky Vaughan on the 1943 Brooklyn Dodgers (Pee Wee Reese was off in the service).
Barkley served in the USAF in World War II.
His one year as a minor league manager came in 1947 with the Waco Dons of the Class B Big State League. The team finished 52-101 and in 8th place.
He was a baseball scout for over thirty years.
