Donald D. Chase June 27, 1945 - January 1, 2016

Donald Chase passed away January 1, 2016, surrounded in the loving care of family and friends. He was born in Mitchell, South Dakota, to Maurice and Maxine Chase where he developed his passion for the outdoors. During high school he worked summers at Custer State Game Lodge driving visitors to see the buffalo herds. He always thought the Black Hills of South Dakota was the most beautiful place in America.

He graduated from South Dakota State University in 1967 with a bachelor's degree in Zoology and in 1971 he earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon.

While in Brookings at South Dakota State University, Donald met his bride to be. They began dating in 1966 and married December 28, 1968, in Canton, South Dakota in a blizzard.

After completing graduate school Donald served as an optometrist in the Air Force from 1971 to 1974 in San Antonio, Texas. Just before leaving the Air Force his son was born. In September 1974 he opened his private optometry practice in Canby, Oregon. In 1979 his daughter was born.

Donald was a quiet, intelligent, independent soul with deep faith who often preferred the solace of the wilderness to the chaos of busy life. Over the years his personal interests almost always involved the outdoors. Initially it was hunting and camping and later on it was rafting, fishing and wildlife photography. Donald won numerous awards through the years for his outstanding outdoor photography.

Donald was always involved in music. It started with singing and playing trombone in high school and college and later moved on with barbershop quartet and church choir singing.

In the last 20 years Donald enjoyed international travel with his wife. They had many trips to Kenya, Brazil, Belize, Mexico and Canada. Some trips were for mission relief work and some for fun. His camera made it on all the trips and he captured many fantastic photographs.

In 2011, after 37 years, Donald retired from full time optometry.

He was many things in his life. He was a husband, a dad, a doctor, a singer, a photographer, a grandpa, a birdwatcher and a landscaper. But most of all he will be missed.
