Barbara Ann Ledbetter Britt passed away peacefully in her home and amongst her family on Tuesday, March 28, 2017. Her keen intellect, wit, kindness and generosity will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched. She was born July 8, 1925 to Abbe Alzu Ledbetter, III, MD, and Elise Fonville Ledbetter in Houston. She was proud to have been born into both the Fonville and Ledbetter families, having a pharmacist/physician Fonville granddad, and her Ledbetter Dad and Uncle Paul, both Houston internal medicine physicians who founded the Ledbetter clinic.
She was predeceased (1993) by her loving husband of 44 years Spurgeon 'Spud' Kyle Britt, Sr., both parents, & Uncle Raymond Fonville, DDS.
Grateful for her enduring love are those who survive Barbara: Her three sons and their wives, Kyle and Robin Britt, (of Houston) Gardner Britt, M.D. and Debbie Britt, M.D. (of Santa Rosa, CA) and William and Anne Britt (of Houston), as well as her 7 grandchildren, David (Pany) Britt, Travis (Lauren) Britt, Elise Britt M.D., Harris (Kristin) Britt, Bailey (JR) Weaver, Kelley Britt and James Britt and her 4 great grandchildren, Isaac Britt, Theodore Britt, Desiree Britt and Stone Weaver. She is also survived by her 2 brothers and their wives, Dale Ledbetter, J.D. and Kate Ledbetter and Abbe Alzu Ledbetter IV, M.D. and Linda Ledbetter and many much loved nieces and nephews, and special godchild/niece Emily Ledbetter Benz.
Barbara, a lifelong Houstonian, attended River Oaks Elementary, Lanier Junior High, Lamar High School, her first 2 years of college at Mount Vernon Seminary, Washington, DC, and graduated from the University of Texas, Austin in 1946 with a degree in psychology. She worked in the personnel department of the Humble Oil Company, and taught at the Oaks School before marrying the love of her life Spud Britt in 1949.
Barbara joined the Pi Beta Phi sorority at UT, made life-long friends and continued a lifetime of volunteerism in community organizations: Her devotion to and involvement with St. Luke's United Methodist Church spanned over half a century, and the spiritual anchor of her life. She serving as chair of the Biblical Garden, on church Advisory board, Initiator with Spud of a Docent program to welcome and orient new members, on Nominating Committee, Chairman of Sanctuary Flowers/Decorations and named a Distinguished Life member of St. Luke's in 2007; a longtime Board member of The Holly Hall Retirement Center as Chair of Garden and Landscaping Committee; Member of the Junior League of Houston serving as Chair, Garden committee, President Sustainer's Club; A Bayou Bend Docent; River Oaks Garden Club, as Chairman of Garden Tours, Garden of the Season and an experienced horticultural judge; life member Texas-Exes, avid UT fan game attendee, appointed to UT Chancellor's Board: the Blue Bird Circle, and Houston Country Club: long-time chair of Thanksgiving Ball, President of Women's Auxiliary, and Social Chairman.
Barbara enjoyed her bridge groups, collecting American period antiques with Spud, and as her boys would say, "dinner wasn't dinner without Mom's dessert". Both children and grandchildren commented "Mom/G-mother never missed a game or school event!"
On Friday, March 31, friends are cordially invited to a family visitation from 5-7 p.m. at the Houston Country Club, 1 Potomac Dr., 77057.
