Roberts, Ruth Marjorie Webb Shipman

Ruth was born on June 15, 1916, at Tuscarora Township, Addison, NY. Her father was Loren Heberling Webb and her mother was Alice Elizabeth Currey Webb (Betty). They lived in Wellsville, NY during World War I. They moved to New Brunswick, NJ in 1920. Her father developed Asian Flu and died on February 3, 1921. Ruth and her mother moved to Bath, NY where Ruth attended Haverling High School from first grade until graduation in 1935. During the last two years she was the pianist for the school dance orchestra and they played for several school functions. Ruth's first year of college was at Alfred University majoring in Ceramic Art. She transferred to Buffalo Schools graduating from the Albright School of Fine Arts and the University of Buffalo in 1939, with a Bachelors Degree in Art Education, minoring in Biology. She taught art education in Buffalo Schools during college, then taught art in DeRuyter, New York Central School from 1939-1941 and she taught Art at Haverling, in Bath, NY, from 1943-1945. Ruth married William LeRoy Shipman, DDS from Utica, NY on December 20, 1941, he served in the World War II Dental Corp until 1945. Upon his return he started a dental practice in Elmira, NY and continued his practice until 1973. He died January 19, 1992. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth J. (Pellenz) Marsh of Chittenango, NY and Barbara R. Shipman of Pine City, NY; grandsons, Christopher D. Pellenz (Mary Lou Helms) of Kirkville, NY, William H. Pellenz (Barbara Sparks) of Chittenango, NY, and four great grandchildren, Josh Jones, Catherine A., Christopher P. and David J. Pellenz of Kirkville, NY. Ruth was past president of; the Chemung County Dental Auxiliary, the Exchange Club Auxiliary and the Mother's Club in Elmira, NY. She also was an active member of Eastern Star and Amaranth Masons Order and she was serving with Girl Scout activities being a leader of Troop 85, District Director and Instructor for over 25 years, receiving the "Thanks Badge" for her dedicated service. She was very active in patriotic organizations having held many positions of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Early Frontier Chapter of the Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America, United States Daughters of 1812, Capt. Henry Hudson Chapter of Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, and the National Society of New England Women. Ruth was a member of the Symphonia Music Society and Thursday Morning Musicals of Elmira, NY. She was the pianist for Amaranth, Masonic Order, for many years in Bath, NY. She was a past member of the Lake Street Presbyterian Church in Elmira and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bath serving as a leader of Naomi Circle in 1994 was also in the church choir for several years, past Deacon, and on the Trustee Committee of the church. She had many other interests, raising African Violets and making reproductions of 19th century porcelain dolls and working on family genealogy. She married Stephen James Roberts, DVM, MS, Professor Emeretus of Cornell University and former Polo Coach, on August 21, 1993 in Woodstock, Vermont. He passed away on January 21, 2005 after nearly 12 short years of a happy marriage and living in Bath, NY. Stephen had two children by his first wife, Betty Jane Harris Roberts; Gail Roberts and Stephen James Roberts, Jr. both living in North Carolina. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
