The fifth child of Joel Smith and Isabella Marshall Smith, of Stony Point, was Lucy Jane Smith (June 23, 1838-April 29, 1927) and she married John Andrew Bowie on April 9, 1857. Her brother, Col A M Smith (then a “General” of militia) was married two days before in Abbeville to Sarah Wardlaw, the fourth daughter of Judge D L Wardlaw.

The Rev John McLees, pastor of the Presbyterian Old Rock Church, performed the ceremony at Stony Point and he says in his diary that “there is a large party present, the night was cold and wet” and adds that he and Mrs McLees did not get home in Greenwood until midnight.

John Andrew Bowie, at the time was a resident and business man of Charleston. He was a native of Tennessee but he was of the South Carolina family of his name. His father, James S Bowie and Langdon Bowie (presumably a brother of James) were partners in a wholesale mercantile firm in Charleston and Joel Smith was a silent partner of the firm and as the inventory of Joel Smith’s estate shows he furnished a good part of the capital with which the firm operate.

John Andrew Bowie served as a Major in Confederate service. After the War Between the States, John Andrew Bowie returned to Charleston and was in the wholesale hardware business with a partner named Wadsworth. Later he returned to the wholesale mercantile business and finally removed to Atlanta where he was engaged in insurance. (Note: 1850 Census of Charleston, SC shows he was born in 1833) He died Dec 13, 1898. He and his wife are buried in Atlanta.
