GORMAN, DONALD JAMES Age 88, a resident of Presbyterian Villages in Redford, Michigan, died March 24, 2017 at Beaumont Health, Detroit, MI, after a short illness.

Mr. Gorman was born October 31, 1928 in Detroit, a son of the late James and Gertrude Gorman, natives of Peterborough, Canada.

He was predeceased by his sister, Phyllis Coffey. He is survived by his brother Lawrence (Dolores) of Livonia.

Mr. Gorman graduated from Western High School in 1946, where he participated in track and field and was one of Detroit's top sprinters. At 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he was promoted to sergeant before the age of 19 as a result of his leadership and mechanical skills as a prop man aboard the escort aircraft carrier USS Siboney, CVE-112.

He returned to Detroit in 1948 and began a 55-year management career in auto parts manufacturing, sporting goods, auto sales and radio in Paramus, NJ. Muskegon, MI, Severna Park, MD, Hopkinsville, KY, Jonesboro, AR, and Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. After he retired and returned to Detroit, he was a consultant to the legal department at Beaumont Hospital.

Mr. Gorman married the former Imelda Orth on December 31, 1949 at Ste. Anne de Detroit Catholic Church. They had eight children: Robert (Bunny) Gorman, Susan (Paul) Tyson, Thomas (Debbie) Gorman, James (Beverly), Anne Gorman, David (Julie), Douglas (Michelle), and Steven (Rose Mary). After the marriage ended in divorce, Mr. Gorman married the former Reita King. They had a son, Charles (Shallen). His second marriage also ended in divorce. Mr. Gorman had 17 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Mr. Gorman was a founding member of Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church in Redford in 1953 and returned to become a communicant several years ago. He spent the last several years as a leader of Bible studies at his church and Presbyterian Villages. While Mr. Gorman's career took him around the world and put him in the company of many well-known entertainers and sports figures, he said he was most proud of his nine children and his service in the Marine Corps.

Mr. Gorman was cremated at Generations Funeral Service.
