Rebecca Skittreal was baptized 21 December 1817 in Burbage, Wiltshire. She was the daughter of William Skittreal and Charlotte Pearce.

Unmarried, she gave birth to Emma Skittreal who was baptized 18 May 1836 in Burbage. At the time of the 1841 Census, her parents were dead and she and her daughter were living with her brothers in Westcott, Burbage. Sometime after that, she left Burbage and turned up in Exeter, Devon by 1848. She left her daughter with her sister Harriett. In the 1860s Emma joined her in Torquay as an adult.

24 Oct 1848 she married cabinet maker John Haynes at St. Sidwell, Exeter. She was listed as a spinster and servant. Both lived on Pottimore Square.

At the time of the 1851 and 1861 Censuses, they lived in Plymouth in the Charles the Martyr district, first at 4 Duke St. (still standing) and then at 11 Bilbury St. (now gone).

In the early 1860s, they moved to Torquay where they remained for the rest of their lives. They lived in St. Marychurch in Shiphay Collaton and then in Plainnoor. In the 1891 Census they were living in Tormohom (Torquay) on Elston Terrace.

Rebecca died at 5 Pennsylvania Road, Torquay. Her death record shows she was buried here.

Rebecca had no more children after Emma. However, the Haynes adopted Emma's third son, William, baptized in 1864 at St. Marychurch as William Skittreal. He is with them in 1871, 1881, and 1891 as William Haynes, but has not yet been found in subsequent censuses. He became a cabinet maker and may have later run a seaside boarding house. (He should not be confused with William Henry Haynes who appears in Torquay records at the same time.)

Rebecca's eldest grandson John Thomas Skittreal was also near them in Torquay in 1871 but it is unknown what happened to him afterwards. Emma, her husband, and other children immigrated to the US in 1871 ending up in Somerset County, New Jersey.
