Stanley Gordon Barrows, 90, was born in Ashland Mass on July 12, 1926. Son of Eugene Barrows and Mary (Bixby) Barrows. He was born at the family home on Granite Street.
He Died on March 26, 2017, at the age of 90 years. He died at OAK Knoll Healthcare Center in Framingham, MA. Of Natural Causes
Stanley is predeceased by his Father, Mother, Brothers (Francis, Ernest, Herbert, Walter) and a Sister Mary. He is survived by brothers Eugene and Harold, Daughter Jean Maurice from Hollis NH, Son James and wife Karen (Levesque) from Lowell Ma: Daughter Brenda from Natick, MA, and son Michael and Wife Cheryl (Mahoney) from Uxbridge Ma. He leaves 4 Grandchildren, Jenna Barrows, Jason Seelye, Brennan Barrows and Heather Barrows.

Stanley was a lifelong Resident of Ashland Ma living most of his life at 158 Front St with his Brothers Ernie and Walter. He resided at the Ashland Retirement Community during the latter part of his life. He was active in the boy scouts as a leader, as a Volunteer Firefighter in his youth, He worked for Renewal Farm Stand, the Ashland Federated Church, and the Ashland School Department as a Custodian. He retired in 1987 after 42 years of service to the town. Stanley graduated from the eighth grade in 1942 and dropped out of High School in 1945 and Started working for the school department to help support his mother and siblings. In 1950 he joined the Army.
Stanley was a sergeant in the army during the Korean War and served in Germany from 1950 to 1952. He was chief of the Fire Department at a Fuel Depot in Berlin. He returned and remained in the Army Reserve until 1956. He was a lifetime member of the VFW in Ashland and the American Legion. He returned to the School Department upon his return. Upon his retirement, he received an Honorary High School Diploma from the Ashland School Department in June 1987. Stanley was also an active member of the Men’s club which was instrumental in getting the athletic fields funded for the new High School in 1971-74. He donated many photos of the Towns Projects especially the new School and Fields to the Ashland Historical Society. Stan was always taking photos and always had his police scanner on and would jump to go see what was happening and to take photos: Especially fires. The job of firemen never really left him.

After a long and fruitful life, Stanley passed on March 26, 2017, at the age of 90, of natural causes. He is survived by his brothers, Eugene and Harold; daughters Jean and Brenda; sons James and Michael; ex-wife Christa Adamski, and 4 grandchildren, Jenna, Jason, Brennan, and Heather.
Stanley was a lifelong resident and prominent member of the Ashland community, living most of his life at 158 Front Street. He was an active Boy Scouts Leader, a volunteer firefighter, a member of The Federated Church of Ashland, and worked part time at Renewal Farm Stand. He worked for the Ashland School Department as a custodian for 42 years. Dropping out of school after finishing the 8th grade to support his mother and siblings, Stanley joined the school department in 1945.
In 1950, Stanley joined the Army where he was a Sergeant during the Korean War. He was also stationed in Berlin, Germany where he was the Chief of the Fire Department. Upon returning to the states, he was an active member of the VFW and American Legion in Ashland. He also rejoined the School Department where he remained until retirement. Upon retiring in June of 1987, he received an honorary high school diploma from the school department for his many years of service.
Stanley was an avid photographer. He donated many photos of town projects to the Ashland Historical Society. He was known to always have his police scanner on and would jump at the chance to take pictures of a local calamity, especially fires.
Stanley loved watching after school sports, especially girls’ basketball, wrestling, and football. He rarely missed a game. He also was an avid fisherman and a lifelong member of the Ashland Fish & Game Club. He would often be at their pond fishing for trout. He used to joke that they stocked it just for him. He also liked to take his children frogging and had many a frog leg dinner. He would visit his son Jimmy in Eastport, Maine. One time on a boat outing, he was almost thrown overboard!
Stanley was also an avid gardener and loved his flower gardens. Thanks to working at Renewal Farm Stand, he had one of the most highly planted and beautiful yards in Ashland. His favorites were dinner plate dahlias, Easter lilies, sunflowers and pussy willows.
Stanley had several dogs and cats during his years in Ashland, but most recently his favorite was a black cat named Blackie. Stan loved to feed the birds and his no tailed squirrel. Shortly before his death, he made his family promise to continue to feed them.
Stanley leaves many friends, in particular, Pat Spinazzola and Robert Hebden. He is now in the Kingdom of our Lord, with his parents, siblings, and friends. He will be greatly missed.

A funeral service will be held Sat. April 8th at 11:00 am in the Federated Church of Ashland, 118 Main St. Ashland with urn burial to follow in Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Hopkinton.
