Carol Louise Freiwald Duncan (1915-2011)

Carol was born in Chicago, Ill., on Dec. 14, 1915. She passed away at her home on Aug. 18, 2011 at the age of 95, with her son and daughter-in-law at her side.

Her family moved to Niceville, Fla., in 1919, at the age of 4 with her parents, two brothers and sister. She never met a stranger and her smile was contagious to all she came in contact with. She worked in the family Freiwald theatre that her father had started. She graduated from Niceville High School and later became the first female switch board operator at Eglin Field circa 1940. She was then named Eglin Field's first sweetheart the same year.

Her favorite activities were raising her son, participating in Krewe of Bowlegs functions (Queen IX with her husband Capt. Billy V), golfing and sewing. She volunteered as a Pink Lady with the Niceville-Valparaiso Hospital for many years and as a Poll Worker during elections at the Valparaiso precinct.

Carol is predeceased by her Father and Mother, Edward J. and Louise M. Freiwald; brothers, Lawrence "Larry" and Gene Freiwald; Sister Evelyn Meigs; and husband Finley B. Duncan.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bruce E. and Lindel R. Duncan; nieces, Nancy Martins, Angela Eanes and Candace Carrillo; nephew, Edward Tras; and sister-in-law, Hilda Freiwald of Husser, La.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church of Niceville. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. (one hour preceding) at the church. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery in Valparaiso. Active pallbearers will be past Capt. Billys from the Krewe of Bowlegs. Honorary pallbearers will be past Capt. Billys of K.O.B. and close family friend, John Montgomery of Panama City, Fla.

The family would like to thank all doctors, Amedisys Home Health Care and Covenant Hospice for all the care administered by them in her final days.

The family requests Katie's House of Flowers in Niceville handle floral arrangements.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Twin Cities Funeral Home, 1405 John Sims Parkway, Niceville, FL 32578, 850-678-7768.
