He graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point, in 1926, first in his class. He served almost all of his four decades in the Army with the Engineer Corps, stationed in Europe, the Far East and the United States. He served as Executive Officer at Fort Belvoir, VA, early during World War II. In 1943, he was named Chief of Staff of the 106th Infantry Division at Fort Jackson, SC, serving with the Division in Europe during 1944 and 1945. In 1947, he was named Deputy Director of Civil Affairs in the European Command and, until 1949, was assigned to Washington as Chief of economics in the civil affairs division of the Department of the Army. He was with the National War College for a year. From 1953 to 1956, he was Assistant Chief, Corps of Engineers, stationed in Washington,DC. He was named commanding general of the Theater Supply Command in Europe in 1960 and Deputy Chief of Staff for logistics of the US Army in Europe the next year, promoted to chief in 1962. In 1963, he returned to Washington to join the office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics. In 1964, he joined the American Battle Monuments Commission, where he was assistant to the Secretary. He was active duty at the rank of Major General at the time of his death. Among his military awards and decorations were three Legion of Merit Medals; Distinguished Service Medal with oak leaf cluster; and the Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster.
