MERKEL -- Truett Thompson, 82, died Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at his home. Services will be 2:00 p.m. today at Merkel First Baptist Church with Reverend Jimmy Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home.
Truett was born June 8, 1924 in Taylor County to Emmett Hayes and Bersha Lula Wheat Thompson. He married Murel Thompson on September 19, 1946 in Abilene.
Truett was a member of Merkel First Baptist Church. He was postmaster for 15 years and worked for the U. S. Post Office for 23 years. He was a master mason and served several times as worshipful master of Merkel Masonic Lodge. He was district deputy for 1 year and received his 50 year pin and the Golden Trowel Award. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star. Truett enjoyed woodworking and golf.
Survivors include his wife, Murel Thompson of Merkel; a son, Wayne Thompson and wife Cheryl of Frisco; 2 sisters, Wanda Watkins of Abilene, Ada Marie Bishop of Midland; and 3 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Lisa.
Memorials may be made to Merkel Historical Museum, 1501 N. 7th, Merkel, TX 79536.
