REV. H.C. ALVORD IN MIDST OF SERMON WHEN END CAME
WEYMOLTH, Mass. Feb. 10 — Rev. Henry C. Alvord, pastor of the Old South-Union Congregational Church, South Weymouth, was stricken by an attack of heart disease while preaching a sermon Sunday night during the regular Sunday evening service in that church and died within two minutes after a physician reached his side.
He was widely known in New England, having been for several years moderator of the Norfolk conference of Congregational Churches and for nearly 33 years pastor of the Old South Church in South Weymouth
The aged clergyman had reached the most absorbing portion of his sermon, World-Wide Evangelism, when he suddenly swayed in the pulpit, clutched at his breast and sank from the view of his startled congregation. In a moment a score or more of the parishioners were running to the pulpit steps, and he was tenderly lowered from the pulpit and held while efforts were made to revive him.
Dr. George R. Emerson hastened to give medical aid but his efforts were of no avail. The pastor died in the church surrounded by men and women parishioners who wept and sobbed unrestrainedly.
Rev. Mr. Alvord was born in Bolton, Conn., April 26, 1854, and received his early education in that town and at the Hartford high school from which he was graduated in 1872. He then attended New York University and was graduated from Hartford Theological Seminary in 1879. In the fall of that year he accepted a call to the pastorate of the Congregational Church at Montague, remaining there until Sept. 1 1886, when he became pastor of the Old South Congregational Church, South Weymouth.
Last December the Old South and the Union Congregational Churches were united, the pastors of both churches continuing in service. Subsequently the pastor of what was formerly the Union Church, Rev. Ora A. Price, went to France as a chaplain, leaving Rev. Mr. Alvord in full charge.
Note: Husband of Alice (Bissell) Alvord. Children include Robert Alvord of Hartford, CT and Henry Bissell Alvord .
