CPL James William Tuck Jr, Vietnam Veteran Native of Bryson City, NC.

Corporal James William Tuck Jr was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, CPL Tuck served our country until February 4th, 1969 in Binh Duong, South Vietnam. He was 20 years old and was married. It was reported that James died from small arms fire or grenade. His body was recovered. CPL Tuck is on panel 33W, line 059 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for less than a year.

Jimmy was a classmate and friend. He was shy, quiet-spoken but always friendly and witty. At first, we were all surprised when Jimmy volunteered (he was already married & exempt) but after considering his nature, the surprise gave way to the reality that this really was the Jimmy we knew. He had always been one who would stand up for what he believed in, never hesitating to defend his friends. Although small in physical stature, he was a giant in spirit. We remember him as a hero, and our graduation class has set up a scholarship in his name. Ron Hutchins, Bryson City, NC 28713, [email protected].

Jimmy had a wife, and was exempted from the draft, but volunteered anyway. His family, classmates and friends remember Jimmy as an intelligent, quiet, considerate, loving and patriotic young man. To the best of our knowledge, Jimmy Tuck was the only casualty from our hometown of Bryson City, North Carolina. We miss him greatly. Ron, [email protected].

We served together, For My Friend, George Howland, PO Box 823, Twain Harte, Ca. 95383.

He served with Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, "The Blue Spaders" 1st Infantry Division, "The Big Red One".

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Bronze Star Medal, The Army Commendation Medal, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
