Melvin Daniel Abel,96, of Red Bluff, has passed away.

He was born in Woodland to Melvin Daniel and Edna McCloud Abel.

Melvin lived at the old Abel place West of Williams, CA and moved to Tadlock Place in Madison. he attended Cottonwood School until his mother died in 1917. He then attended Freshwater School and graduated from Williams High School. He worked on ranches and farms until 1932 when he went into the CCC. He worked for the California Division of Foresty as a fire fighter until joining the Army in 1942, where he was a fire fighter and rifleman. He was honorably discharged at Camp Beale, California in 1946.

After the war, Melvin went back to Guam and Okinawa working as a fire suppression crew foreman. After his Pacific tour ended, he worked the next 6 years fighting fires for the California Division of Forestry in Stirling City. San Leandro was his next home, where he worked 7 years as a warehouseman for General Foods, Maxwell House Coffee Division. He then worked for the Navy Exchange System at Treasure Island. In 1972, he moved to Los Molinos and in 1976 to Red Bluff, where he lived out his years. In Red Bluff, Melvin was well known for his dedication to softball. He groomed the fields, umpired games and played with the older gentlemen. He was extremely proud of the trophy he was presented by the people in charge of softball in Red Bluff.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Franklin Henry Abel of Red Buff and his sister, Annette Abel Jones, of Williams.

He is survived by his sister, Annette Abel LeGrande of Williams and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held.
