Elizabeth was a daughter of Ann Bower and John Briggs of Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England.

She married (1) Nicholas Welch II at Chesterfield on 17 July 1818.

Their children: Nathaniel 1819-1822; Sarah 1821-1822; John 1823-1910; Mary Ann 1825-1826; Ann 1826-1904; William 1830-1842; George 1837-1842.

All their family joined the Latter-day Saint Church in England in 1841 and the next spring immigrated to America, locating at Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois. Only thier son, John remained in England, as he was apprenticed to work there until age 21.

Among others, they also traveled with a Miles family of which the parents, William and Jane, died leaving two small children, who were taken in and remained with the Welch as family members from then on.

In 1842, in addition to the loss of their sons, William and George, Elizabeth's husband, Nicholas died the 25th of November. This left just Elizabeth and her only remaining daughter, 16 year old Ann, to care for the Miles children, four year old Jane and two year old John.

Shortly before her son, John, was able to come to America, Elizabeth married (2) Robert Madsen/Madison, who died a short time later. John was in Nauvoo by 1845, where he married Eliza Billington and Ann Welch married Robert Crookston.

The families eventually migrated to the Salt Lake Valley in 1852. In later life, Elizabeth married (3) Edmund Ellsworth, who died soon afterwards and she was a widow for the third time. She lived in a little home near her son, John, and his family at Three Mile Creek (now Perry, Box Elder, Utah) until her death at 68.
