WM. MAGONIGAL EARLY NATIVE, AT CLOSE OF LIFE
Peacefully and quietly, almost without premonition of life’s end, William Boyd Magonigal , a pioneer of pioneer parents, passed away at his home on Zion street yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. He was chatting with his wife but a few moments before, and he was perfectly conscious even to his last breath.
Born June 23, 1857, at Sucker Flat, one of the thriving old towns of pioneer days near Smartsville in Yuba county, the son of William and Nancy Magonigal, Mr. Magonigal had spent his entire life time in Yuba and Nevada counties.
He attended the schools of Yuba county and when he left school days behind him, he engaged in ranching and stock-raising. He was widely known and highly respected. The Magonigals were that kind of people, staunch sturdy stock, tillers of the soil, industrious, the best type of men and citizens, whose spoken word was as binding as writing and everywhere accepted as such.
They were a large family, only one of whom now survive, Thomas Magonigal of Smartsville.
Mr. Magonigal was twice married, his first wife being Miss Ella Bowman to whom he was married in 1889 and who died six years later. On October 25, 1899, thirty four years to the day prior to his death, he was married to Miss Ida Hughes, and their married life has been most happy and ideal.
Besides his wife and his brother there are a number of nephews and nieces surviving.
For more than 50 years Mr. Magonigal had been a member of Sutter lodge No. 100, I. O. O. F., of Wheatland and Rebekah Lodge No. 89, F. and A. M. of Smartsville.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the Holmes Funeral Home, Mrs Mary Allen of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Grass Valley, officiating. Interment will be made in the Fraternal cemetery at Smartsville.
