ONTARIO — James (Jim) Howard Lewallen, 88, of Ontario Oregon passed away Monday March 13 2017 at the Brookdale assisted living facility in Ontario Oregon.

Jim was born December 25 1928 in Ontario Oregon to James H. Lewallen Sr. & Ellen A. Davis.

Jim served his country in the Oregon Nation Guard which he joined at the age of sixteen in 1944. He then enlisted in the army in 1949 and served in the Korean War where he attained the rank of Sergeant. He earned a good conduct medal and the Korean Service Medal with 5 bronze service stars. He was honorably discharged in 1952.

Jim later joined the United States Merchant Marine. During his career as a seaman he received numerous letters of commendation from his superiors praising the quality of his work and his ship and crew were recognized for their service in a war zone during Operation Desert Storm. During his travels in the merchant marine he met his future wife, Michiko, in Japan. After a whirlwind ten year courtship they were married in 1967 at the American Consulate and traveled back to live in Ontario.

After Jim’s retirement from the Merchant Marine he was employed as a janitor at the Ontario McDonalds.

Jim was an avid reader and liked to keep up with the news and current events. He grew tomatoes in his backyard garden and was a caregiver to the feral cats in his neighborhood.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife Michiko Lewallen, parents James H. Lewallen Sr. and Ellen A Davis, his brother William and sisters Esther, Florence and Patricia. He is survived by many nieces and nephews. One nephew of whom Jim was particularly fond is Howard (Mary) Fochtman of Casper Wyoming. Jim also leaves behind many friends who loved and cared about Jim very, very much.

A graveside service will be held Saturday March 18 at 2:00 pm at Evergreen Cemetery in Ontario Oregon. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Jim’s name to The Ontario Feral Cat Project, PO Box 44, Ontario Oregon 97914.
