Richard was the fourth child of Richard and Mary (Shaw) Torpey. Richard’s father died in 1908 leaving has mother as the sole support of her 8 children. Tragically, Mary died less than two years later in 1910.

Following his mother’s death, Richard and his brother Raymond (James) moved into the home of Maurice and Jennie Griffin on the same 7800 block of Kimbark were the Torpy family was living. Richard having never married would continue to live at the Griffin home until his passing in 1950.

For most of his adult life Richard was a Chicago Fireman. An older brother (William) and younger brother (James) were also firemen and youngest brother Thomas was a policeman.

Richard died at Hines Hospital and is buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery alongside his parents (grave #1). Both parents were originally buried in St James Sag Cemetery but were moved to Holy Sepulchre (5/16/1928).

At the time of his death Richard was survived by all 7 of his siblings…
