On June 21, 1910, she married John Randolph Dos Passos, in Wilmington, Delaware. According to the (October 1910) newspaper announcement of their marriage, they met in Europe. According to modern sources, they met as early as 1883 in Washington, DC.

According to a book on the writer's life, John Randolph Dos Passos refused to acknowledge him as his son until around 1912 (see Virginia Spencer Carr's Dos Passos: A Life (1984)).
