John George Anschutz, son of Nicolus [sic] Anschutz and his wife, Katharine Dorothea Hilgenberg, was born in the year 1857 on the 6th [14th] day of February is [sic] the German colony, Niedermundjau [sic], of the Volga district in Russia. He was baptized in infancy and thus became a child of God. In confirmation he publicly ratified the covenant vow and confessed Christ before many witnesses. In this confession of the Lutheran church he remained faithful until death.

In the year 1878 he left his father's house, and together with his older brother, Christian, came to this country, landing at Ellsworth, Kansas, on the 17th of August. In the spring of the following year these two brothers bought themselves a home in Russell county about three miles southwest of Wilson. Later George settled near Dorrance where he remained until death.

In the year 1884, December 18, he was married to Mary Affeld who came from the former province Posen, in Germany. To this happy union six children--three sons and three daughters--were born. The oldest daughter died in childhood. He leaves to mourn his death Ernest C., Henry G., and George W. N., Clara M., and Lena D., besides nine grandchildren as well as a number of relatives and friends. His age at the time of his death, Friday, March 11, was 70 years and 1 month. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Wm. J. Lind at the Lutheran church in Dorrance, Monday.
