Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Jo Atkins Houck “Mary Jo”, of Ruston, will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at Owens Memorial Chapel in Ruston with the Rev. Dale Oden officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.
Mrs. Houck was born December 10, 1941 in Winnfield, LA to Fred Atkins and Agnes Parker Atkins. She died March 13, 2017 in Frisco, TX. Mary Jo was a long time member of Temple Baptist Church in Ruston until her relocation to Texas. She was a graduate of Ruston High School and earned both her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Louisiana Tech University. She recently celebrated her 50 year alumni status from her beloved university where she also worked in the Chemistry department until her retirement. Mary Jo enjoyed spending time with her countless friends, being a part of Garden Club, shopping for jewelry and clothing, going to movies, celebrating holidays, dining out with others and playing board games with her grandchildren. Her relocation allowed her to spend time with her family, meet many more friends and create new memories that could be cherished.
Mary Jo Houck is survived by her son: Robert Oliver Houck, Jr. “Robby” and his wife Amy Abadie Houck of Frisco, TX and three precious grandchildren: Lauren Abby, Emma Kate and Josh Robert Houck. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Oliver and daughter: Mary Holly Houck.
Serving as pallbearers will be: Corbett Best, Professor Danny Eddy, Kane Ferguson, Matt Ferguson, John Richmond and Henry Roane. Honorary pallbearers are: Jesse Bennet, Max Otwell, Jack Abadie and Wayne Houck.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Friday, March 17, 2017 at Owens Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Platelet Disorder Support Association.
