US Marine LCPL William Claude Roberts, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Boone, NC.

US Marine Lance Corporal William Claude Roberts was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Marine Corps, LCPL Roberts served our country until March 18th, 1968 in Quang Tri, South Vietnam. He was 20 years old and was not married. It was reported that William died from small arms fire. His body was recovered. William was born on September 11th, 1947 in Boone, North Carolina. LCPL Roberts is on panel 45E, line 028 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 3 years.

William only got to live 17 years in Boone/Watauga and his memory would only extend to those who knew him through 1965. I am proud to say I knew him and that he was a classmate of mine at Appalachian High. FYI, the class of 1965 was the last graduating class at AHS. The three county high schools consolidated the following year into Watauga High. Our class of 100 was the largest ever at AHS.
William Roberts and I were classmates, class of 1965, Appalachian High School in Boone NC. William went into the Marine Corps the same day I went into the Air Force, 26 May 1965. Both of us were 17 years old. It was not till I visited the Vietnam Memorial on the 10th anniversary of "The Wall" that I found William was just 9 days older than me. I was at the ceremony, standing honor guard, as a member of the 71st Aerial Port Squadron, Langley AFB VA. I was serving in the Panama Canal Zone, at Howard AFB, when I heard of Williams death. Unfortunately I could not leave my duty station to attend the services for him. I didn't know he had received two Purple Hearts, had been stationed elsewhere before going to Vietnam, nor the particulars of his death. The last time I saw William was at our graduation ceremony. Unfortunately I was too wrapped up in myself and hanging with closer friends to say goodbye to William and wish him the best. Guess I was contemplating my going into the Air Force much more than him and another classmate going into The Corps. It actually surprised me that William went into The Corps. He was quiet, shy and not athletic. We had a class of 100. The black and white photo of William comes from our HS annual. Or at least it is the photo that was published. He sure looks like a "true Marine" in the other photo. Once again, thank you for all your efforts. I have been able to utilize Find A Grave for research with my Wilcoxson/Wilcox and Boone family members. Finding photos of graves and bits of background information of some of my ancestors has helped me a lot as the de-facto genealogist for most of my families. Gary O. Hodges, MSgt USAF(ret), Chaplain, Thomas Nelson Jr, Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, Newport News VA.
